2023 Dufferin County Community Grant Recipient
$3,000

Sharing our grant

Thank you for the generous funding from Dufferin County, with the funding we grew approximately $3000 worth of storage food for Orangeville food bank. Together with Savanah the network Food Manager, we have created a distribution schedule for the Jan-March of storage food.

The objective of the Good Food Project is to improve food health by increasing access to nutritious food for food insecure community members and to support food skills, social networking, and food sharing knowledge. The Good Food Project was established in 2019 with food growing results of approx. 128,000 lbs of food grown ‘with’ and ‘for’ regional food banks and panty programs annually.  In a nutshell, Everdale grows fresh food and storage food, and community partners distribute it through networks and programs.

Outline of the project
To use the positive power of food to tackle the systemic issue of community food insecurity.

The Good Food Project

  • Increases fresh food access to community members in need i
  • Increases social connectivity for low-income community members through food growing and food sharing activities.

How it works
Growing food: Community members, supported by Everdale’s team of experienced farmers, grow large volumes of culturally appropriate fresh crops for themselves and others, increasing fresh food access for the community. The food is grown at Everdale Farm near Hillsburgh. Participants can participate in Community Harvest Days at Everdale, or they can receive food through Orangeville Food Bank Programs and their need network partners.  This season we hosted 459 volunteers at Community Harvest Days.

Impact
By providing $3000 of fresh food to the food bank, this allows the Food Manager to use earmarked food funds to purchase other food for clients, thus providing more food in the long run for clients.

Orangeville Food Bank (OFB) serves 994 – Community members. Food provided is distributed at OFB and at food banks in Shelburne, Grand Valley, and rural Dufferin County. See above schedule for numbers and distribution plan
