Sharing our story

With support from Dufferin County’s 2025 Community Grant ($8,450, year one of a three-year grant), Caledon Meals on Wheels delivered Senior Wellness programming at Simon Street Senior Residences in Shelburne.

The project has brought two weekly, on-site wellness opportunities directly into the building, including gentle exercise and engaging group activities that encourage movement, learning, and social connection.

The impact has been meaningful for Dufferin residents. Since launch, participants have attended consistently and return each week eager to connect with neighbours in a welcoming, familiar space. The exercise sessions are helping residents stay active and mobile, while the group format is reducing isolation and building a stronger sense of belonging. Offering the program within the residence has also removed a major barrier: transportation. Residents have shared that the convenience and accessibility made it easier to try the program in the first place, and the friendships and benefits of movement are what keep them coming back.

Participant feedback highlights the difference this has made: “It’s been a great chance to spend time with other tenants and the activities have been enjoyable” (Floyd). “It has been great… It helps to get us out of our comfort zone” (Sandy). “It’s so nice not to feel unwanted and to actually feel wanted… it’s so nice to have friends and be included. A great safe space for us” (Jan).

By expanding these Seniors Wellness Programs in Dufferin, the grant is helping local seniors stay healthier, more independent and more connected to their community.
