Sharing our story
The Good Food Project, supported by the grant funds, focuses on mitigating food insecurity in Dufferin County through community-centred harvesting initiatives. By organizing Community Harvest Days, the project encourages residents to come together, foster collaboration, and educate themselves about sustainable food practices. In 2023, this initiative successfully harvested and donated approximately 20,000 pounds of fresh food with 436 volunteers, to local food banks (2500lbs to Orangeville), directly benefiting vulnerable populations in the area.
Participants have shared their positive experiences, highlighting the program’s community-building aspect. One volunteer remarked, “Harvesting together not only filled the food banks but also strengthened our bonds as neighbors.” This reflects the project’s goal of promoting equity by providing access to nutritious food for all community members, regardless of socio-economic status.
The Good Food Project aligns with Dufferin County’s Strategic Priorities in several pivotal ways. It champions Climate and Environment by advocating for sustainable agricultural practices that minimize ecological impact. The initiative fosters Community by facilitating active engagement, reinforcing social ties, and building a cooperative spirit among residents. Economically, it alleviates pressure on local food banks by reducing their reliance on external food sources. Moreover, it embodies Equity by ensuring inclusivity in food access, empowering marginalized populations.
Overall, the funding has enabled the Good Food Project to cultivate a healthier, more resilient community in Dufferin County, focused on sustainability, collaboration, and shared well-being.
Additionally, the Good Food Project not only addresses immediate food needs but also fosters awareness about sustainable agricultural practices and the importance of local food systems. The project exemplifies a holistic approach to community health, creating lasting connections between residents and the land while empowering individuals to take an active role in contributing to the well-being of their community. Continued support for this initiative will further strengthen Dufferin County’s resilience and commitment to tackling food insecurity. Thank you for considering the positive impact of this project on our community!
