What’s new in Food?
Well what isn’t new in Food? The local food movement is active in Headwaters and the outputs from the Food Summit continue to evolve. Note that the final Food Summit report is now available on the HCIA site: http://headwaterscommunities.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Headwaters-2nd-Annual-Food-Summit-Report.pdf As yet to be posted is the executive summary, which Theresa Sauren of Duff Biz has recommended be drafted in the form of an info graphic. Stay tuned for this lively output. Be sure to check out A Taste of Maple taking place from March 28 – April 13, 2014 at locations across the Headwaters region.
Farm to School Kits
As well, the Education Literacy and Access group has been approved for funding and will be undertaking a project whereby Farm to School kits will be developed and delivered to schools. They will be following the model of the Everdale Farm. Everdale’s aim is to: “be a farm-based organization that provides hands-on, solution-based food and farming education to build and engage healthy local communities. To accomplish this we deliver a wide range of hands-on learning programs on food and farming to people of all ages and backgrounds.” Hats off to Everdale for sharing the wealth and supporting this terrific initiative.
In addition to this project they will be working on a food box program via a selected number of schools. More on these programs in upcoming newsletters.
