Headwaters Trail Counter Workshop
This event has passed.
In May 2012, representatives from eight different trails and conservation groups attended the Headwaters Trail Counter Workshop co-hosted by HCIA’s Trails Working Group and the Credit Valley Conservation Authority (CVCA).
This workshop is part of a broader collaboration between HCIA and CVCA to establish the Headwaters Trail Counter Loan Program which makes five automated trail counters available on annual loans to interested area trails groups. This is the first program of its kind in Canada and was made possible with funding from the Province of Ontario’s Healthy Communities Fund.
By using automated trail counters, Trail Managers can begin to answer such questions as:
- How many people are using our trail?
- What are the times of day; days of the week or times of year that get the most use?
- Are our trail users coming from the local community or are they visitors from elsewhere?

- Why Monitor Visitors? – This presentation, by CVCA’s Victoria Edwards and Laura McDonald, explains the benefits of tracking and monitoring trail visitors and offers an overview of CVC’s Automated Counter Program
- Trail Counting Equipment: Technical Report – This report written by the CVCA, provides a comprehensive explanation of how to establish and maintain an automated trail counter program
Headwaters area trails groups who are interested in accessing a trail counter in 2013 through this program are asked to contact Chris Broom, Chair of HCIA’s Trails Working Group via email at action@headwaterscommunities.ca.
