The Bruce Trail is a public footpath running from Niagara to Tobermory. It is entirely built and maintained by volunteers for the purpose of protecting the Niagara Escarpment, the most significant landform in southern Ontario.
In the Caledon Hills section, the Trail follows the glacial moraine deposits on top of the buried Escarpment. Mature hardwood forests and wetlands allow for wonderful birding opportunities. This section is also very popular for its fall colour display.
Cheltenham Badlands
“Badlands” is a geologic term for an area of soft rock devoid of vegetation and soil cover that has become molded into a rolling landscape of rounded hills. They are formed with Queenston Shale and the reddish colour is the iron oxide in the shale. This site was acquired by the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 2000 and is under the care of the Bruce Trail Association.
Please help protect this sensitive environment from degradation, visitors are requested to comply with the following: no sliding or digging, stay on the flat area in the vicinity of the interpretative signs, stay off the trail during wet conditions, no tobogganing, no motorized vehicles, no bicycles, no horses and please, do not litter. The Side Trail is closed due to erosion. Take nothing but photographs and leave nothing but your thanks.

| Description | The Caledon Hills section of the Bruce Trail starts close to the Badlands near Cheltenham, ascends slowly to the top of the escarpment before descending steeply down the Devils Pulpit to the Forks of the Credit. It then continues through the village of Brimstone and follows the Credit River past the well known Cataract Waterfall with its hydro station ruins. The trail then turns first south and then east to follow the edge of the escarpment. At Airport Road it turns north to pass through the Glen Haffy Conservation. The final section takes the hiker into the beautiful Hockley Valley and along quiet country roads to the picturesque village of Mono Centre. |
